The sketch exploration can focus on variations on a single theme (say, Lion styled Running shoes), or explore a wide range of directions (create a whole shoe-zoo!).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Depending on the kid's size and age, keep in mind the varying proportions (kids shoes are normally not just scaled down versions of adults), and have fun with the inspiration. They can be anything from more literal (googley-eyes on the tongue), to more interpretive (through colors, patterns, materials).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Feel free to develop your rapid viz skills with a touch of color, or work on your linework and perspective. Select and existing shoe and create a series of concept variations, proposed for Spring 2015 models, hybrids, etc. Sketch exploration (20 small, loose sketches, minimum, 3 refined preliminary designs.). &lt;br /&gt;Deliverable: Composition of sketch exploration, 3 refined preliminary designs and image of original shoe to be created on one 11” x 17” board. 11x17 print and PDF for digital presentation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Project 2 – Phase 2 – Final Design&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Based on one of the preliminary design, create a detailed line drawing in Adobe Illustrator of the selected concept shoe showing lateral, medial top-down, heel, tongue and detail views as required. Focus on nailing the proportion, and exploration of different patterns, while keeping in mind what makes a running shoe look like a running shoe. Don't think too hard, just draw.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For this exercise it may help to take a look at some pics online. See below in &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;BOLD&lt;/span&gt; and PDF doc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;This project explores the relationship of fashion and forecasting to aspects of athletic footwear. Combining footwear sketch exploration and market research Project 1 is designed to expose students to the fundamentals of footwear design in practice and application and develop some of the basic skills required by a professional footwear designer.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;– 20% of Course Total&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Project 1 – Phase 1 – Trend forecasting. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Create a visual mood board from photos, images, swatches, etc. based on research (magazines and online, in person, etc.) and store visits for a proposed 2013 collection. Forecasting should be specific to a footwear design/type. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Choose from – Running, XT, Outdoor/Trail, Basketball, Football/Cleated, Court, Cycling.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Deliverable: Board to be one &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;11”x17”&lt;/span&gt; size to also include written explanation of trend direction.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Trend Board 30%  (10/30 – Visual Presentation, 10/30 – Storytelling, 10/30 Concept)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Project 1 – Phase 2 – Concept Design. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Create a series of concepts for an applied footwear design based on the Trend board. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Deliverable: 3 Concept Designs (all shown on one &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;11”x17”&lt;/span&gt; board) with each design to be presented in a minimum of two views. The course is structured into short phases and deliverables that follow the process from sketch to spec through 3 applied short projects.
