Ok All, as the last (maybe) blog sketch exercise, this one is a bit different.

Do one page, any concept, any style, any category, but keep it on a single page. Include as much exploration as possible while also keeping in mind the layout of the single page. (You might want to use a larger page for this if you have a small sketchbook).

I'm looking for a single hot page with great sketches, great designs, and great visual layout and flair.

Blog sketch exercise #3

This one should be fun! -

Design a series of kids athletic shoes (any athletic category you wish), based upon an animal. The sketch exploration can focus on variations on a single theme (say, Lion styled Running shoes), or explore a wide range of directions (create a whole shoe-zoo!).

Depending on the kid's size and age, keep in mind the varying proportions (kids shoes are normally not just scaled down versions of adults), and have fun with the inspiration. They can be anything from more literal (googley-eyes on the tongue), to more interpretive (through colors, patterns, materials).

Feel free to develop your rapid viz skills with a touch of color, or work on your linework and perspective. This exercise is designed to help you practice your footwear sketching skills while having some fun.

It's apple iPhone announcement day (liveblog 1pm EST link below). What would apple shoes look like? What tech might they have? Sketch your idea of apple shoes (not just slapping on a logo, but considering style and materials) in any athletic category you like.

Feel free to develop your rapid viz skills with a touch of color, or work on your linework and perspective. This exercise is designed to help you practice your footwear sketching skills while having some fun.

Project 2 - Redesign, Specification and Presentation

Project 2 brief

NOTE - As discussed, final deliverables now changed for all boards to be 11x17" unmounted print and PDF for digital presentation.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
This project will focus firstly on the exploration of evolutionary design that is common practice in footwear as new styles are often introduced based on existing or previous styles. Following this redesign exercise, students will explore the technical and presentation aspects of footwear design including construction specification and rendering.

PROJECT DELIVERABLES
Project 2 – Phase 1 – Redesign, Concept Design
Students will redesign an existing shoe and are to take into account the design language, branding and technical features of the existing shoe, while progressing the design and technology forward, assuming the new design will launch Spring 2015.

Concept Design. Select and existing shoe and create a series of concept variations, proposed for Spring 2015 models, hybrids, etc. Sketch exploration (20 small, loose sketches, minimum, 3 refined preliminary designs.).
Deliverable: Composition of sketch exploration, 3 refined preliminary designs and image of original shoe to be created on one 11” x 17” board. 11x17 print and PDF for digital presentation.

Project 2 – Phase 2 – Final Design
Based on one of the preliminary design, create a detailed line drawing in Adobe Illustrator of the selected concept shoe showing lateral, medial top-down, heel, tongue and detail views as required. All parts to be labeled and construction details noted with callouts.
Deliverable: 11” x 17” print and PDF for digital presentation.

Project 2 – Phase 3 – Photoshop Rendering
Based on your final selected design, create a presentation Photoshop rendering showing a minimum of 2 views.
Deliverable: Presentation rendering on one 11” x 17” print and PDF for digital presentation.

GRADING
Concept Design 30% (7.5/30 Visual Presentation, 7.5/30 Storytelling, 15/30 Concept)
Final Deign 35% (10/35 Visual Presentation, 10/35 Technical, 15/35 Concept )
Photoshop Rendering 35% (15/35 Visual Presentation, 20/35 Technical)
100%

Blog sketch exercise #1

Quantity isn't usually more important than quality, but in sketching, it's all about practice, practice, practice.

You have 1 hour to sketch 30 different variations of any running shoe. Focus on nailing the proportion, and exploration of different patterns, while keeping in mind what makes a running shoe look like a running shoe. Don't think too hard, just draw.

For this exercise it may help to take a look at some pics online. See if you can figure out what elements, parts, and proportions are common across different brands, style, etc.

Have your sketches done and ready (and numbered!) for me to check out immediately after lecture in Studio at 11:25am.

Project 1 - Footwear Design Forecasting and Exploration

This project explores the relationship of fashion and forecasting to aspects of athletic footwear. Combining footwear sketch exploration and market research Project 1 is designed to expose students to the fundamentals of footwear design in practice and application and develop some of the basic skills required by a professional footwear designer.
– 20% of Course Total

Project 1 – Phase 1 – Trend forecasting.
Create a visual mood board from photos, images, swatches, etc. based on research (magazines and online, in person, etc.) and store visits for a proposed 2013 collection. Forecasting should be specific to a footwear design/type.

Choose from – Running, XT, Outdoor/Trail, Basketball, Football/Cleated, Court, Cycling.

Deliverable: Board to be one 11”x17” size to also include written explanation of trend direction.

Trend Board 30% (10/30 – Visual Presentation, 10/30 – Storytelling, 10/30 Concept)

Project 1 – Phase 2 – Concept Design.
Create a series of concepts for an applied footwear design based on the Trend board.

Deliverable: 3 Concept Designs (all shown on one 11”x17” board) with each design to be presented in a minimum of two views. (Presentation sketch/rendering can be by hand or computer).

Concept Design 70% (20/70 Concept, 20/70 Visual Presentation, 10/70 Storytelling, 20/70 Technical)

Enables students to demonstrate through a series of short projects their versatility in product design or in complementary design fields such as communication, graphic design or design experiments. Emphasis is on time management and the ability to work independently on assigned projects.

This course will provide students with exposure to the technical and creative skills required for athletic footwear design. It is designed to expose students to all of the practical phases and deliverables commonly executed by a practicing, professional athletic footwear designer. The course is structured into short phases and deliverables that follow the process from sketch to spec through 3 applied short projects. Focus will be put on time management, process, and meeting technical and creative requirements for all deliverables.

Projects and deliverables will echo a functioning professional work environment and it is expected all due dates, deliverable formats and schedules will be strictly observed.
